Documentation People Actually Open
Start from tasks, not architecture posters
Document how to deploy, how to add a feature flag, how to rotate a secret, how to restore a backup. Link deeper design notes, but lead with tasks.
Put the happy path first. Edge cases below.
Keep examples copy-pasteable
Commands should run if paths are adjusted. Include expected output snippets. Dead screenshots rot; text ages better when reviewed quarterly.
- Owner name or team on each page
- Last reviewed date
- Link to the related service dashboard
Delete or archive aggressively
Wrong docs are worse than missing docs. If a page is stale, mark deprecated or remove it. Trust is the real metric.
Keep going
Operational excellence is mostly habits: staging parity, migrations with rollbacks, and alerts that page humans only when action is required. Noise trains people to ignore alarms.
Invest in observability before exotic architecture. Logs with request IDs, basic dashboards, and clear ownership maps prevent weekends lost to archaeology. Document the happy path for deploy and the panic path for rollback in the same page.
When adopting a library, read its security advisories policy and release cadence. Abandoned dependencies become silent risk. Schedule dependency updates in batches with tests rather than endless tiny interruptions.
